How Does SIP Trunking Work?
...with an IAD
If you have a traditional analog or digital PBX, an Integrated Access Device (IAD) is needed to enable your PBX phone system to connect to the IP based service. There is no need to replace any of your phones or change your phone numbers. Your phones stay connected to your existing phone system, as they are today.
During installation, the old outside phone lines are disconnected from your phone system and then the system is connected to the new IAD. The IAD is connected to your data router and will route your voice traffic to a either a secure managed or unmanaged Internet access. Your phone system will continue to support station to station calling, voicemail, auto attendant, and hunt groups/rollovers.
...with an IP PBX
If you have an IP PBX, your IP device provides a direct connection to your Voice Phone switch and communicates to all end points over IP. There is no need to replace any of your phones or change your phone numbers. Your phones stay connected to your existing phone system, as they are today, and will continue to support station to station calling, voicemail, auto attendant, and hunt groups/rollovers.
